Being Pilipino American

Pilipino American means being a Pilipino chasing the American dream.
It means leaving the barrio to make it big in the city so we become people struggling in the city.
If we make it big enough, we move out of the city to the suburbs so we can leave all the ones struggling in the city.
It means chasing a dream and forgetting the people.
It means being cliquey, acting superior to other ethnicities and still managing to exclude fellow Pilipinos from the group.
It means dressing or acting Black, acting or dressing White, and not knowing how to dress or act Pilipino.
It means not supporting Pilipino entertainers until they make it to American Idol.
Most of the time, it means coming together only under shallow circumstances.
It means being the butt of obscure jokes that wouldn't make sense unless you weren't or didn't know a Pilipino.
It means getting on with your life not knowing that there's a problem at all.
This is probably not the rule but I know for damn sure it's not the exception.
