without the individual(s), the group cannot exist as the group. it is a completely different group once an individual is missing.

All questions with certain obvious answers, but double thinking about it, not answering would be best.
But since I do what I want, here goes:
Rape. A no-no when involving involuntary sexual intercourse. But more than welcome when used in a competitive scenario. Exempli gratia, "I raped the sh!t out of you in NBA Street 2." Case and point: watch your language around children.
The individual is by far the most important thing to the individual. A priori, dRockizzle so eloquently put it, the group CANNOT exist without the individual. Yet to answer a question with a question, how important is the group to the individual? The CEO of Auqafina is ever changing, but my water always tastes fina.
Originality is key, but "copying" leads to great accomodations in this day. Would you be happy if there is and ONLY IS Coke to pour into your fountain cup at lunch? Maybe the more refreshing taste of Pepsi would tickle that sweet tooth. Maybe Chrysanthemum's Verizon Razr phone gets more bars than Earl's Cingular Razr. Maybe, just maybe, Hanes Underwear provides the support AND comfort Fruit of the Loom so severely lacks. The "copycat" makes us happy, therefore we make the copycat (or pussy) happy likewise. And, as always, please give credit to the copypussies. Macy's, qui facit per alium facit per se; please shop at Gimbel's.

a lot can go into this whole individual v. group thing, especially because once it's divided into separate "cases," everything becomes relative. some food for thought though: the group could be more important once the whole is greater than the sum of its parts...if that makes any sense.
The group thing depends on the way you look at it. Evolutionarily speaking, the group only exists because it benefits the individuals involved. You work with someone because it will somehow make life easier on you, or it will increase your individual benefit. Very VERY few people can do something for a group without ANY benefit to self (benefit to self including that warm and fuzzy feeling you get for doing it, not to mention the amazing things people could potentially say to/about you). The group exists solely to benefit the individual. People buy into the group because it somehow benefits them: lets them think less as they follow along, lets them feel accepted, lets them meet people so they can mate and have lots of offspring. When was the last time you did something for the group, or just for another individual, for a COMPLETELY selfless reason? Doing something nice for a friend would fall under keeping a friend (which benefits you via companionship, someone to do you a favor if you need it, etc.) Even when say a parent dies for a child, there's evolutionary benefit to it (another generation carrying your genes will live and make more copies). It's not conscious all the time, but it's there. It's not a happy way of looking at life, but really, it holds true. Humans are not above evolution. Humans are not above laws of nature. But don't worry: your friends still love you. It just happens to be that loveing you somehow benefits them, too. And don't get mad at them. You're no different. The group exists for the individuals involved. To benefit the group benefits the individual.
Despite your very convincing and accurate description of human nature, I have reason to believe that there is someone out there who did something for someone else with no benefit to himself/herself. In fact, the aftermath of such a selfless act would only prove to make the performer only worse off with no expected benefits by any measure, not even that warm fuzzy feeling of helping others because it was worth it. In actuality, it was not worth it. And that person...was Jesus Christ. J/K. I'm not anyone like that. But I'm sure there's someone out there that has done that at least once.
gah ok here goes:
mmm the rape bit. first off is it really rape if the girl wants it? as in the book... like they call it rape but i dont think it is. and rape is never right but it's less wrong i suppose you'd say... if the guy doesnt realize the girl doesnt want it. not sure how often that would happen but just a thought.
as far as the group / individual thing. either extreme turns out bad so all i can say is a balance.
&& like the extreme of copying to the point of distrusting originality ...definite eww. but as far as taking something done and improving on it i really dont see anything horrible about that.
